Read to excel: Mastering the Battle of the Books

0

Can you imagine your child getting as excited about reading as a Ducks or Beavers fan gets about the Civil War football game? Believe it or not, students all over Oregon are motivated to this level of excitement through the annual Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) competition. And just like an athlete must train hard to succeed, these readers are working hard to increase their reading comprehension, achieve academic excellence and develop strong teamwork through the OBOB program. One of the tools that helps these–and ANY–book lovers excel in their reading is the Battle of the Books Quiz Center developed by local teacher, coach, and mom Dr. Lisa Rodriguez.

How kids benefit from the Battle of the Books

Placing in these competitions can be beneficial for students when applying for colleges, jobs, or other opportunities. The books chosen are always high-quality children’s literature. Kids develop camaraderie, work as a team, and learn good sportsmanship while also improving reading skills and developing a deeper love of reading. They learn how to concentrate under pressure, answer questions in front of a large group, and defend their answers with specific text from books.

OBOB competitions begin in February, with regionals in March, and state competitions in late March or early April. Teams of four to five students who sign up to compete start at the school level, with finalist teams moving on to regionals, and then to the state level.
